Conservation by Covering Damage Area/s with Translucent Fabric (silk gauze, polyester stabiltex, nylon net).

This method is used to stabilize severely damaged areas or the overall poor condition of a textile. The damaged areas or whole surface is covered with a translucent fabric and then joined with lines of fine threads stitches around the perimeter and along the design contour.

Before

The ground fabric was very deteriorated and in crumbaling condition. To prevent further loss, the edge of the ground was covered with a silk crepeline, secured by stitches, and the loose beads were re-attached.

After

Pillowcase Front.

The pillocase were made of 18 century embroidered fabric.Full View Before

The pillowcase had to be disassembled. The front panel was covered with polyester stabiltex fabric prevent further loss of embriodery.

Then joined by lines of stitches around the perimeter and along the design contour. Fine polyester threads pooled from the fabric was used.

The frayed silk applique area first was stabilized by a couching technique (Please see the couching technique page for more information).

In The Process

Next, the trim was deatached. Then the whole area was covered with polyester stabiltex, and the trim was re-attached.
